WEEK 01

WED09/07

IN-CLASS

CATOLOGUE DESCRIPTION

The goal of the course is to develop the student's understanding of the unique communication conditions affecting the structure and nature of information in web based interactive communication. Concepts evaluate the nature of information mapping, appropriate navigational systems and an ideation methodology appropriate to developing effective interactive web communication.

This class period will be spent going over the syllabus, what is expected of you, and in turn, myself - this pertains to deliverables, timing and formatting.

The rest of the class will be spent brainstorming and in class discussion on the first portion of the first project.

ACTIONSCRIPT, JAVASCRIPT, HTML5?

The industry, due to the iPad, is beginning to move away from ActionScript and Flash as the primary authoring tool. This is many years out, and may still change should the iPad continue to lose marketshare. However, this class will still be going into the beginning steps of Object Oriented Programming and ActionScript. ActionScript is based off of the ECMAScript standard, which is the backbone for Javascript and jQuery - and as such viable learning tools.

If you have the desire to learn the new popular buzzword: HTML5 - well we won't really be getting into that 'per se'. However, HTML5 is requires very strong understanding and fundamentals of good Box-Model HTML write-up and CSS based design - which we WILL be getting into. One of the primary focuses of this class is to get you much better at this - and by doing so, REALLY sets you up in a good spot if you have a desire to continue on and learn 'HTML5'. Don't worry though, if you feel like going crazy we will be here to hold your hand.

If you have the ability, I STRONGLY, STRONGLY, STRONGLY encourage you to buy Flash CS5. Alternately, I STRONGLY, STRONGLY, STRONGLY encourage you to buy FlashBuilder 4 (formerly Flex) for free. FlashBuilder is much more Object-Oriented than Flash, but is a ridiculously good tool for coding in. You should put in your request tonight though, as it takes up to two weeks to validate the license.

ON ANOTHER NOTE

This month marks my last semester at CCS for the forseeable future. I am moving out to Salt Lake City, and am transitioning the class to Almir Horozic's capable hands. I will always be available via email, IM or whatever means you deem necessary should you need help, guidance or advice.
